Computer to computer

Pair two of your computers, then start, follow and approve work on one from the other. The usual case: a Windows PC that your Mac sends work to, such as a Windows build.

What you need

  • ThreadGrid on both computers, signed in to the same ThreadGrid account (Settings → Account).
  • ThreadGrid open on the computer that does the work. On Windows it keeps running in the tray when you close the window.
  • The project added on the computer that does the work, with at least one agent signed in there.

Pair two computers

  1. Start on the computer you'll send work from

    Go to Settings → Computers. The other computer is listed once it's signed in and open. Click Pair.

  2. Compare the six-digit code

    Your computer shows Approve on … with a code like 123 456. The other computer asks whether to let yours send it work, and shows a code too.

  3. Approve on the other computer

    If the codes match, choose Codes match, allow. If they don't, choose Decline.

A pairing works in one direction. To send work the other way too, go to Settings → Computers on the other computer and choose Send work there too, then compare codes again.

Send work

Pick the other computer in the switcher at the top of the sidebar. The window now shows its projects, threads, task board and approvals. Start a thread as usual: it runs there, with that computer's agents, access level and approvals.

Approvals waiting on any paired computer are counted in the switcher and raise a system notification. You can answer them from either computer.

To move a waiting task on the Tasks board, choose Send to …. It goes to the same project on the other computer, matched by git remote or folder name. Add the project there first if it's missing.

Keep the other computer reachable

In Settings → Power on the computer that does the work, turn on Keep this Mac awake (or Keep this PC awake) and, on Windows, Start ThreadGrid when I sign in.

Security

Computers talk through ThreadGrid's relay, end-to-end encrypted. The relay passes messages along without being able to read them, and stores nothing. The six-digit code stops anyone in the middle, even someone holding your account, from pairing in your place.

A computer that sends work can do what a paired phone can (threads, tasks, Fusion, approvals), plus add project folders and read files in known projects. It can't open a terminal, remove projects, or change the access level or other settings on the other computer.

To unpair, choose Remove in Settings → Computers.

The iPhone app pairs from Settings → iPhone with a QR code instead of a six-digit code. It's in testing and not yet available to download.

Not in the beta yet. You choose which computer runs a job. Picking the best computer automatically is planned. Mac to Windows hasn't been checked end to end on every setup yet: tell us if something breaks.
